Kenya Treks
Introduction
Tailor made walking safaris on Mount Kenya for small groups, led by an experienced and friendly team who are based in Nanyuki - a small town on the northwest of the mountain. Less crowded than its popular neighbour Kilimanjaro, Mt Kenya has some of the finest walking routes, off the beaten track, suited for the intrepid adventurer.
Location
Mount Kenya – the second highest mountain in Africa, is located in the middle of Kenya, on the equator. It has eleven small glaciers. The landscape ranges from lush forest to dramatic peaks, with the Afro alpine zone in between. Here the Jurassic period comes to life as you walk through vast U-shaped valleys dotted with extraordinary giant groundsel and lobelia. The mountain is home to many animal species and you may see a herd of eland or a pre-historic looking chameleon.
Description
Kenya Treks specialises in walks on Mount Kenya from high altitude trekking to strolling in the foothills. A summit challenge takes you to the top of the third highest peak, Point Lenana, which stands at 4,985 metres and is higher than Mont Blanc. Guests also have the option to spend a few days on the eastern side of the mountain based at the Chogoria Bandas. Days are spent walking through forest glades to tranquil Lake Ellis, hiking up Mugi Hill for the more energetic, or exploring the spectacular Nithi waterfalls.
Accommodation / Facilities: There is bunkhouse accommodation on the mountain, but camping is recommended to experience the true mountain wilderness. Terra Nova Quasar mountain tents are equipped with Coleman lanterns and Thermarest Prolite. Leki walking poles are provided. John Githinji, the team’s cook, is very skilled at producing appetizing and delicious meals, even in the most remote locations.
Guided by: John Karumba and his team lead guests every step of the way, and ensuring safety and comfort, as best possible. John advises on high altitude trekking techniques, and is a wealth of information on the mountain’s flora, fauna, and the history of its exploration. The team is well versed in ‘leave no trace’ principles, and makes every effort to collect litter found on the trails.
Trip Consultant: Lucy Booth and the team walk together on the mountain every few months. These trips provide an excellent opportunity to discuss every aspect of the safaris, from safety procedures and routes to camp preparation and meals.
Seasons: Although it is possible to walk all year round, access routes particularly on the eastern side can become impassable during the normal rainy seasons of April to May and November.
Access: Nanyuki or Naro Moru is the meeting point. Traveling from Nairobi, there is a scheduled 45 minute flight to Nanyuki Airstrip or you can travel by private vehicle, a 3 hour journey. An overnight stay at a hotel in the Nanyuki or Naro Moru area is important for acclimatisation. The following day you will be accompanied by the team to one of the park gates where your safari begins…
