Offbeat Safaris
Introduction
Off beat Safaris offers horse riding safaris from luxury mobile tented camps in remote areas of Kenya. Professionally guided and supported by Landrovers, guests have the option to book either exclusive tailor made safaris or join a set departure safari. Laikipia is a unique wildlife area, with abundant game including several rare species. Offbeat safaris provide riding adventures across remote ranches within the Laikipia plateau.
Description
Offbeat has thoroughbred and thoroughbred-cross horses, many home bred and all trained for polo. Rides between campsites vary from 4 to 6 hours a day, with the most riding done in the cooler morning hours. During the heat of the day, the ride stops beside a river or under a canopy of trees, to enjoy a picnic lunch (made by each guest and carried in saddle bags) and rest for a couple of hours, before hacking into a ready made camp in the evening. Not everyday is a ‘moving’ day and on rest days guests can enjoy early morning and evening rides and game drives. Groups have a minimum of 4 and maximum of 12 guests, and set departure trips have either 11 day or 14 day itineraries.
Accommodation/Facilities: All safari guests, at some stage during their trip, stay at Deloraine house, the Voorspuy’s home, in the Rift Valley. Built in 1920 by Lord Francis Scott, a prominent early settler, the house has 4 double en-suite rooms and extra accommodation of two doubles in an adjacent cottage. The house is located within 5,000 acres and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Safari accommodation is in traditional luxury safari tents – most with twin beds, although a double can be arranged.
Hosted by: Guests are hosted by Tristan and Cindy Voorspuy at Deloraine. Safaris are led by Tristan and his excellent team of staff, and Jakob Von Plessen, born and brought up in Argentina, who has been working with Offbeat for the last 4 years.
Optional Extras: Wines and spirits on occasion and air charter flights.
Seasons: Set departure safaris can be booked throughout the year except in April, May, November and December. Tailor made safaris open all year.
Access: Guests are met at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and taken to the starting point of the safari

Laikipia, lying on the thresholds of Kenya’s wild Northern rangelands stretches from the slopes of Mt Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley and is larger than all of Kenya’s national parks and reserves except Tsavo. Its magnificent escarpments descend into the arid lands and semi deserts of Northern Kenya. A sanctuary for over 80 mammal species including black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, Grevy Zebra, reticulated giraffe, aardwolf, wild dog and a wealth of African game, Laikipia biodiversity is globally unique.
