Ol Lolokwe Nature Trails, Samburu

Introduction

This adventure based safari experience is run by Namunyak Wildlife Conservation Trust of Sarara Group Ranch. Ololokwe mountain is one of the most striking landmarks in Northern Kenya, standing 2000 meters above the flat plains. A sheer rock face makes this flat topped mountain both incredibly unique and apparent from great distances. The mountain attracts hikers, rock climbers and para-gliders alike.

Location

Ololokwe is located to the North East of Laikipia, in Samburu District. Panoramic vistas stretch across the arid plains to Mount Kenya and the Mathews range. The summit of Ololokwe has high altitude mist forest with giant cycads and superb birdlife including Kenya's largest nesting colony of Ruppell's vultures.

Description

Ololokwe Nature Trails, a community owned and managed safari operation, offers walking trips from their Lewa Downs base up the slopes of Ololokwe Mountain. Clients can book from 1 to 4 day trips, staying in carefully selected campsites, including a site on the top. Tailor made to suit all sizes of groups, (ideal for student and adventure groups), number of days available and fitness levels. Both the rocky terrain, which is steep in places, the heat and the altitude, can be testing.

Hosted by: A local Samburu tour guide accompanies guests on Ololokwe trips. The guide is a qualified member of Kenya Professional Safari Guide Association.

Seasons: Open all year round.

Access: By schedule flight to Lewa or by road via Nanyuki.
