Getting to Laikipia
By road
Nanyuki, 190 km north of Nairobi on the A2 motorway, is the gateway to Laikipia for visitors travelling from the Kenyan capital. The drive, on good tar all the way, takes roughly three hours via Sagana, Karatina. The road carries on to Meru and Isiolo. Laikipia can also be reached from Nakuru in the Rift Valley via Nyahururu – a drive of some 130 km on good tar that also takes about three hours. Note: Most roads in Laikipia are murram or earth; so, in view of the district’s erratic rainfall, four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended year round.

Laikipia, lying on the thresholds of Kenya’s wild Northern rangelands stretches from the slopes of Mt Kenya to the rim of the Great Rift Valley and is larger than all of Kenya’s national parks and reserves except Tsavo. Its magnificent escarpments descend into the arid lands and semi deserts of Northern Kenya. A sanctuary for over 80 mammal species including black rhino, elephant, lion, leopard, Grevy Zebra, reticulated giraffe, aardwolf, wild dog and a wealth of African game, Laikipia biodiversity is globally unique.
