Il Polei Conservancy

Il Polei

Location

Il Polei group ranch has dedicated 5,600 acres for wildlife conservation to the 43,000 acre Naibunga Conservancy, which links 9 group ranches in central Laikipia. Il Polei is located 40kms out of Nanyuki on the northern slopes of Lolldaiga hills. The ranch is home to buffalo, elephant, gerenuk, lion and baboon, and bird life is abundant.

Camping

Il Polei group ranch has several campsites within its wildlife conservancy. Some are positioned near a seasonal river bed and others next to rocky hills, with viewpoints. The campsites are ideal for weekend campers and adventurers.

Adventure

Plenty of space for scenic walks and hikes. Visitors also have the chance to link up with the Uaso Ngiro Baboon Project team to visit the world’s most researched troop, and learn a little about their social behaviour – they are ‘almost human’. Other specific activities include ‘Walking with Maasai’ to learn how people, livestock and wildlife live together despite the growing challenges. Guests must be accompanied on all walks and seek advice of the whereabouts of big game before heading out on bikes.

Facilities / Services

Water can be collected from Il Polei town, firewood, day-time rangers and night watchman, Safaricom network in places. Guests are requested to dig temporary toilets and cover on departure.

Access / Directions

Approximately 40 kms (1½ hours) from Nanyuki town, & 4-wheel drive vehicle required. Out of Nanyuki town turn left at Total petrol station, turn right after 8kms on road marked for Dol Dol, and after 13km turn right where the tarmac ends, go through Il Polei barrier after 20 kms, and meet your guide here.
