Sasaab Lodge, Samburu

sasaabLocation

Sasaab is located in the Westgate Community land, west of Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves in Kenya’s Northern Frontier District.

Description

Sasaab’s position high on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro is the perfect place to sit and watch game from the comfort of your private verandah or garden. Elephants frequently come to the opposite bank, whilst looking through the binoculars or the telescope will always reveal something small but interesting.

Accomodation: 9 individual rooms, accommodating up to 18 guests.Each room is over 100 m² in area, with magnificent  views of the surrounding land and a high degree of privacy. All rooms have private plunge pools, private ensuite open air bathrooms with showers and double sink.

Activities;

  • Game Drives on open vehicles where guests will discover a wide variety of wildlife. Samburu is home of the ‘Samburu Special Five’, which includes the Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk & Somali Ostrich. Abundant birdlife and fauna along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro offer great game-viewing either by foot, vehicle or on a camel. Exclusive use of a vehicle is also possible, and charged at US$250 per day.
  • SpaSaab: A purpose built, state of the art haven of peace and serenity. The building itself is located in a prime position, nestled into rocks that overlook the Ewaso Nyiro watercourse, and beyond to a pure wilderness. Our world class beauty treatments are performed by expert therapists using Liz Earle Naturally Active Beauty Products.
  • Fly Camping: *NEW for 2011* Guests who want to experience the true wildness of the area can spend one or two nights walking and fly camping in the further reaches of the conservancy. Dinner is served under the stars and the night spent under mosquito tents, giving a clear view of the sky above. Also available are Guided Walks, Bird Watching, Star Gazing, Swimming Pool and Internet access.

Weddings & Honeymoons: Sasaab is well equipped to host weddings. Up to 24 guests can be accommodated at the lodge for a wedding. We recommend that a civil wedding be arranged in the home country, and that a ceremony at Sasaab be the celebratory element.

Responsible Tourism: Sasaab is located on the Westgate Community Conservancy, which is home to over 600 families who, up until 2004, had seen no benefit from tourism (one of Kenya’s largest industries). With regards the environment, Sasaab generates hot water using solar panels, uses energy conserving light bulbs and seeks to save water wherever possible. The lodge has its own vegetable garden where some of the food for guests is grown.

Access:

By air: twice daily scheduled flights from Nairobi into Samburu National Reserve. Charter flights to Sasaab’s airstrip from anywhere in the country.

By road: six hour drive from Nairobi, north past Mt Kenya and up into the Northern Frontier District.
